The Light of Life

“You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?” (Matthew 5:14-15 MSG)

We’re the light of the world, not the light within our Christian-clique. The last thing that God wants is for us to just shine the light for ourselves and turn a blind eye to those who can’t see in the dark. We’re called to carry the Torch wherever we go, so that the lost can follow the Light. How else are they meant to find their Saviour in the shadows unless someone shows them the way?

If you think about it the phrase “under a bucket” could be interpreted as being the Christian bubble. The Light of Life will die if we smother its flame, which we tend to do these days. Do exactly what Matthew 5:16 (MSG) says, “Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!” Shine like the Son!

Question: do you have a public or a private faith?

You want to know how to put this into practice? Well, here’s a challenge for you. Do a random act of kindness today. You can do anything you want. Invite the kid who is bubbled out of the lunch bunch to sit with you and share a sandwich. Take your neighbour’s dog for a dander when they are bed bound. Help your dad sweep up the street or let your mum put her feet up for an hour or two as you do the spring-cleaning. Go on, I dare you! When you go the extra mile the Light of Life shines ever-bright in their eyes! Just think about it.

You could take it from a different angle, and compare the bucket that we hide our light under to the Church building. It’s only by “By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God” (Matthew 5:16 MSG). We have to bring the Light outside of the Church so everyone can see that “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12 NIV). When we don’t shine like the Son it’s as if we have Him boxed, labelled and bubbled. He can only do so much. He can only light as many lives as we let Him.

“I am sending you to them to open their eyes so that they may turn away from darkness to the light” (Acts 26:17-18 NCV).
